Contest Information

The 31st Annual Wake Forest Martin Luther King, Jr (MLK) Holiday Commemoration will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.  The MLK Committee is again offering a slate of contests for students in our Wake Forest/Rolesville area Schools and affiliated with the Wake Forest Community.  This is an opportunity for our communities to come together and recognize the talents of students in our schools.  The contest consists of Performances (dancing, singing or speaking), Writing (essays and poetry) and Art (drawing and painting).  The contests are based on this year’s theme. 

​Theme: “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”  -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
 
Thanks in advance to your students participating! This year, a minimum of three $1,000.00 scholarships will be offered to graduating high school seniors toward post secondary education. Areas of performance are listed below. Students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their talents by:

PERFORMING

  • Dancing to songs where the lyrics and choreography embody the life and legacy of Dr. King.
  • Singing songs that express the ideas and life of Dr. King.
  • Reciting one of Dr. King’s speeches; or reciting original poetry or a short story written by the student about the life and legacy of Dr. King. (The author may have another student recite their poetry during judging).

WRITING

The student’s writing should be in support of one of the following prompts or centered around this year’s theme.
 
  • Racial Equality
  • Social Awareness
  • Education

CREATIVE ART

​Artwork should illustrate the life and legacy of Dr. King or relate to the Program’s theme.
(Be sure to add a post card to include a summary about your artwork)
 

Important Dates 

  • Student’s work and registration form must be uploaded by Monday, Jan. 5, 2026. (Reminder, your art work MUST have a postcard attached describing your work).
  • Contest winners will be notified by Monday, Jan. 12, 2026
  • Contest winners will be recognized on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026 @ Friendship Chapel Baptist Church, 237 Friendship Chapel Rd., Wake Forest, NC.
